Aray Y. N., Veselova A. S., Knatko D. M., Levchenko A. V. Creating a circular economy with and without plastic: A strategic challenge for SIBUR.

The teaching case can be used for the in-depth study of circular economy principles by university students. The case reveals the concept of “circular economy” and allows to analyze the implementation of circular economy principles in SIBUR’s activities. The case considers the areas and models of circular economy principles application, determinants of SIBUR’s transition to circular economy, specificities of circular economy development in Russia. The case of SIBUR, whose main activity is associated with the processing of oil products into polymeric materials, allows to discuss the issues related to opportunities, limitations, reasonableness and prospects of introducing and development of circular economy. The case describes the challenges faced by petrochemical companies — the anti-plastic trend, on the one hand, and the uniqueness of plastic as a lightweight, recyclable material, on the other hand. The case pays much attention not only to global trends in the field of processing and the introduction of the principles of a circular economy, but also to the institutional features of the development of this sphere in Russia. The case can be used on different levels of educational programs in the courses on strategic management, business modeling, supply chain management and sustainable development. The solutions proposed by students can be applied both in the current situation in the company and the external environment, as well as in the future development of the sphere with focus on the trends. Keywords: circular economy, SIBUR, petrochemistry, plastic, carbon footprint, innovations.
